The author, Zaheen Nanji, experienced her first challenge by stuttering at the age of 5. Frozen in fear, she couldn’t even speak up in school. At the age of 15 she moved from Kenya to Canada without her parents where she found herself not even able to answer a simple phone call. Unfortunately, she was too focused on not stuttering that any chance of a solution was blocked out. She was hiding behind a mask of perfectionism (can you relate?).
The irony here is that fear can be your best friend (keeps you “safe”) and your worst enemy (keeps you from doing what you want to do). This created conflict which afflicted her with embarrassment and confusion. Faced with low self-confidence she found her “comfort” in food. Not wanting this to be her life, Zaheen became determined to get to the root of her stuttering manifestation.
