Confidence, Competence and Connections

WelcomeOver the last six months, I have heard a recurring statement online and offline, plus have seen it in action:  female entrepreneurs are the fastest growing segment locally and globally. Supporters believe that women can and will head up our economic recovery by starting new businesses or growing their existing business through employees and/or innovative revenue partnerships. But, in order to succeed at this lofty goal, there are 3 C’s that need to be attended to and finessed:  Confidence, Competence, and Connections.

On March 26, 2014 at LA Hotel Downtown (Los Angeles, California) American Express OPEN delivered an awesome, free #CEOBootCamp event that was filled with dynamic business owners (entrepreneurs and CEOs) in the audience and on stage, who have been there and done that. Notably a lot of women who started their business during the recent recession. What really made this event stand out was the fact that it was truly open. By attending, listening and participating in lively conversations, I witnessed energetic rooms filled with tons of sharing about ways to open doors, along with confidence, competence and connection tips to open doors that may be temporarily shut.

AmexOPENOPEN for Women: CEO BootCamp helped women business owners tap into a wealth of ways to develop their full potential as CEOs, along with strategies to grow their businesses through shared advice, education, inspiration, mentoring and resources. Since the speakers were extremely authentic, helpful, knowledgeable and transparent, they were able to effectively create a more confident, competent and connected crowd of approximately 500 enthralled females.

Here is how American Express OPEN immersed female entrepreneurs in the 3 fundamental pillars for successful ventures:

Confidence. Confidence is essential for CEO Success. Learn how to shift your mindset and behavior to help embrace your innate strengths and boost your business.

Competence. Sharpen important skills as a business owner such as harnessing the power of money, building and running a team and tackling tough decisions.

Connections. Connections are key to a thriving business. Participate in facilitated networking and gain insights into topics such as building an Advisory Board or finding a mentor.

Surrounded by such brilliance and excellent content, my top 3 takeaways were hard to prioritize, but here they are:

1. Five keys for you to start “Owning the Room” delivered by Sophia Chang/A Better Tomorrow

C.H.A.M.P. acronym: Confidence, Humor, Articulate, Modesty & Prepared

2. Three steps to deliver a working business model via the “Innovative Business Strategies Panel” delivered by Susan Feldman/ One Kings Lane, Alli Webb/Drybar, Dr. Taryn Rose/Taryn Rose

  1. Create value
  2. Deliver value
  3. Capture profit

3. One quote to exude confidence, competence and increase connections

You don’t have to be good-looking to look good.

Thank you so much to the village at American Express OPEN, the speakers and the attendees for making this educational, engaging and exciting event happen – I am happy to witness the historical ripple effect that you have created. I promise to continue doing my part as the CEO of me, serving others, and look forward to seeing an even stronger group of female entrepreneurs emerge.

Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.

Kathy, you’ve given a really well rounded re-cap of the event!
I have to say, I really enjoyed Charlotte Beers (Ogilvy & Mather) presentation, as
well as Denise Wilson of Desert Jet. And I loved Sophia Chang’s riff on ‘verbal gymnastics.’

American Express fully delivered on instilling confidence, competence and connection.
Happy to have met you there and to be part of a stellar day!
    Best wishes for continued success,

I, too, loved Sophia Chang’s riff and the way she had the whole room engaged and laughing from start to end.
We were definitely a lucky bunch to enjoy such an awesome day and I’m happy to have met you as well.
Best wishes on your continued success,
