Last Monday, I covered the A, B, C, D’s of Entrepreneurial Success and mentioned that my next post will cover how A + B + C + D = E, but I didn’t let you know what “E” stood for. It stands for excellence. My inspiration for this blog title comes from a book I read… In Search of Excellence, an international bestselling book written by Tom Peters and Robert H. Waterman, Jr..
Did you know that the book wasn’t planned?
It started out as a study where Tom and Robert started asking colleaugues:
1. Who’s cool?
2. Who’s doing cool work?
3. Where is there great stuff going on?
4. And which companies genuinely get it?
When asked if their process was fundamentally sound? “Absolutely!” was the response, backed by “If you want to go find smart people who are doing cool stuff from which you can learn the most useful, cutting-edge principles, then do what we did with Search: Start by using common sense, by trusting your instincts, and by soliciting the views of ‘strange’ (that is, nonconventional) people. You can always worry about proving the facts later.”
Excellence is defined as a talent or quality which is unusually good and surpasses ordinary standards. It is also an aim for standards of performance. Aristotle once said. “We are what we repeatedly do . . . excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” Another related concept was eudaimonia which was the happiness which resulted from a life well-lived, being prosperous and fulfilled.*
In the last blog, I mentioned that it comes down to personal choices every day that will result in rewards and consequences. These simple, yet powerful basics beat brilliance any day, because it is the little things that will add up to excellence. If you want to start building your BIGger brighter future today, here are the 4 action steps for Accountability + Bounceability + Consistency + Discipline that will equal the Excellence Habit:
1. Find an accountability partner and help each other build a stellar reputation.
2. Learn from each mistake, fix it, laugh, and then get back up and try again.
3. If you promised that you will do something, make yourself fulfill that promise no matter what.
4. Figure out how to stay disciplined to reap more and more rewards each week.
Everyone starts out with great intentions, wonderful plans, and rosy expectations but only the ones that follow the A-E’s will stay the course and be successful. Excellence is easier said than done, so I leave you with this thought: excuses and excellence cannot co-exist.
I hope you are inspired to excellence…because the world sure needs your unique talents and gifts!
